Noted baroque and historical performance scholar Ton Koopman plays battle music, a genre mainly practiced on the Iberian Peninsula, though there are other examples throughout Europe. Full of musical effects and frequently using the chamade reeds found on Iberian organs, rhythm, not melody or counterpoint, is emphasized in batalhas. Koopman also plays several pieces of a less bellicose style, demonstrating the gentle flue stops. In 1985, Patrick Collon built the organ used on this recording in the Church of Saint-Lambert in Woluwé-Saint-Lambert, Belgium in the Spanish style. Not a strict copy, it has some Flemish influence, which began to be shown in Spanish organs of the 16th century. In addition to the expected chamade reeds, the instrument has a divided keyboard, and the bottom octave of the manual can be converted to a short octave.
