The Genius of Hill & Son: An Aural Perspective, 1832–1915. Hannes Ludwig, editor.

In 2024, a team of organists from the UK, Germany, Sweden, South Africa, and Australia recorded gratis a 3-CD set of 20 historic organs built by the Hill company of London. This compilation features organs built between 1832 and 1915, and all are in original condition. This project was supported by the British Institute of Organ Studies (BIOS) and the Organ Historical Trust of Australia (OHTA),and money from the sale of these CDs is to be donated for restoring the gravestone of William Hill, founder of the firm, at London’s Highgate Cemetery. Several celebrated organists of the early 20th century are heard on remastered 78-rpm records, and a number of prominent organists of today recorded works on historic Hill organs.

CD 1, 1832–1877, Our Lady and St. Wilfrid, Warwick Bridge, Carlisle (1843); St. Nicholas, Ingrave (1856), Church of the Holy Name, Manchester (1871), Cathedral Church of Our Lady and St. Philip Howard, Arundel (1860-1873), Gordon Chapel, Fochabers, Scotland (1874).

CD 2, 1877–1915, Tanunda, Australia; Christ Church, Streatham, London (1886), Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul, Goulburn, Australia (1890), Sydney Town Hall, (1889), St. Joseph's RC Church, Highgate (1897), Kilbarchan, Scotland, West Parish Church (1904), All Saint's (1905), Falun, Sweden (1914), All Hallow's, Gospel Oak, London (1915).

CD 3, Historic Recordings; Westminster Abbey, London (1884/1908), Queen's Hall (1893), Westminster Central Hall, London (1912).

The Genius of Hill & Son was a big project and has been concluded very successfully. Recording of the organs is excellent, the musical selections are representative of the instruments, and the performances are first-rate. This is a highly recommended example of how a historical recording project can also be a pleasure to enjoy.
