Organist Esther Sialm plays works of Josef Rheinberger on the largest organ in Switzerland: the Goll organ at Kloster Engelberg. This is considered Sialm's legacy performance; she succumbed to cancer just eleven weeks after making this recording. The 1877 Friedrich Goll instrument at Kloster Engelberg began as a much smaller instrument: 50 ranks across 3 manuals and pedal. In 1924-26, Friedrich's sons Karl and Paul Goll expanded the organ to its present 135 ranks across four manuals and pedal. This project, which was thoroughly miscalculated by both the monastery and the builder, bankrupted the firm in 1928.
