Born in France in 1886, Marcel Dupre became the most famous organist-composer of the early twentieth century, his substantial catalog of works devoted to the organ. As a performer, he became renowned for his brilliant improvisations, and from one of these was derived the Symphonie-Passion, providing a glorious array of tonal colors and dynamic contrasts. It is one of the most important and imposing works composed for large organ. Stefan Engels plays the organ in the Katholische Heilig-Geist-Kirche (Church of the Holy Spirit) in Mannheim, Germany.
