Fauré: Requiem / Messe Basse (Beckley, Gedge, Oxford Schola Cantorum, Carey, Oxford Camerata, Summerly)
$17.98
The famous Requiem is performed by the Schola Cantorum and Oxford Camerata directed by Jeremy Summerly. In using a small string orchestra with organ and a small choir, Summerly replicates the work’s original instrumentation. The composer, in reaction and contrast to the massive Requiem of Berlioz, deliberately chose these simpler forces for liturgical use at the Church of the Madeleine in Paris. Also on the disc are an engagingly simple Tantum ergo by Déodat de Séverac, a Vierne Andantino for organ alone, Faure’s Messe basse for women’s voices and organ and the sumptuous Cantique de Jean Racine written while Fauré was a student of Saint-Saëns.
