Heaven in Merano In Northeast Italy, surrounded by mountains, lies the small town of Merano, with about 36,000 inhabitants. It is in this unique community near the Swiss border (where the population is divided roughly in equal halves of German and Italian speakers) that Martina Apitz and Rose Kirn play the two manual, 15-stop Steinmeyer organ built as Opus 285 in 1885 at the Protestant Christuskirche. Kirn and Apitz play mostly Romantic music, rounding out the program with Bach, Mozart, and a work by Apitz's husband, Manfred.
