The wind bands and historic pipe organs represent two vibrant musical traditions in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. These instruments, imported from Spain in the 16th C, have accompanied religious and festive celebrations ever since, the organs playing in the churches and the bands in the streets. While the bands were improved and consolidated by the 20th century, the organs gradually fell into disuse and were nearly forgotten until a renewed interest in these instruments in the 1990's led to 10 restoration projects in Oaxaca, more than in any other Mexican state.

The similarity in sound of the wind bands and the pipe organs inspired the Instituto de Organos Historicas de Oaxaca (IOHIO) to create a concert program for organ and percussion instruments of the regional music played by the bands during the Guelaguetza, Oaxaca's annual folk dance festival. With this we were able to fuse the two musical traditions. This book includes 24 scores transcribed from the concerts with information about each piece, photos of the dances or the corresponding region, and biographies of the composers. We hope that organists, pianists and other keyboard players will be drawn to this exciting music, and have fun with it.
