Olivier Messiaen The Mystical Colors of Christ
David Chalmers, James Jordan, and Sharon Rose Pfeiffer, all Artists-in-Residence with Gloria Dei Artes Foundation centered at the Church of the Transfiguration, Orleans, Massachusetts, perform varied selections from the organ works of Olivier Messiaen and explore his concepts of color and mysticism. An extensive essay in the CD booklet guides listeners through the compositional techniques and ideas behind the pieces. To be completed with 11 divisions and nearly 12,000 pipes, the organ is a composite of elements of 15 different E. M. Skinner organs built from 1903 to 1940, carefully restored and integrated into a single instrument by Nelson Barden & Associates of Boston. The organ is suspended in the side aisles of the church and runs for nearly one-hundred feet along the length of the building.
