Reger in the "Black Forest Cathedral"
The Benedictines established St. Blasien in the 9th century, and the Abbey church was destroyed by fire twice. After the first fire, a domed church in classic Roman style was completed in 1783. In 1874, a fire destroyed all interior furnishings and decorations and it was subsequently rebuilt. Now used as a school by the Jesuits, the complex has been completely restored. The highly regarded Schwarz organ, in a case based on the fire-destroyed Silbermann organ, dates from 1912-13 and proves an ideal instrument for Reger.
