Soar Above
Fred Hohman has done it again! This time he has recorded Charles-Marie Widor's absolute best excerpts from his famous symphonies including the Toccata from Symphony number five. Recorded on the 1927, 4-manual, 108-rank, Casavant-Schantz organ, Opus 1177 in Saint Andrew's Lutheran Church Mahtomedi, Minnesota. Widor became "temporary" Organist at Saint Sulpice, France in 1870 where he played the largest Cavaille-Coll organ. Even though this album was not recorded on a 19th century Cavaille-Coll the Organ at St. Andrew's has nothing lacking. The size and specification are a good fit for the music of Widor and the acoustic is rich enough to support his music, yet not so dense as to obscure its detail. Finale (Allegro vivace) from Symphony 7 Allegro cantabile from Symphony 5 Andante-Allegretto from Symphony 7 Finale (Allegro) from Symphony 2 Pastorale (Moderato) from Symphony 2 Scherzo (Allegro vivace) from Symphony 4 Andante cantabile from Symphony 4 Toccata (Allegro) from Symphony 5 Meditation (Lento) from Symphony 1 Intermezzo (Allegro) from Symphony 6 Andante sostenuto from "Gothic" Symphony Finale (Vivace) from Symphony 6
