Le Grand Orgue Cavaillé-Coll de Saint-Sernin de Toulouse Michel Bouvard, titular of this masterpiece, contributes a fine essay to the booklet enclosed with the recording. Another is written by François Sabatier. The two essays deal with the evolution of Cavaillé-Coll’s career and the aesthetic climate of the era. The recordings present expertly-performed examples of literature demonstrating the symphonic style of the organ. The organ at St. Sernin was inaugurated in 1889 by Guilmant with 54 stops on 3 manuals and pedal. From the beginning it has been recognized as an important work of art and it remains essentially unchanged today. WIDOR from Symphonie, No. 5, Op. 42, No. 1 I. Allegro Vivace (Variations) IV.
