Todd Wilson Plays Christmas Music on the Severance Hall Skinner, Cleveland
Todd Wilson performs Variations on Christmas Themes (and the Widor Toccata from Symphony 5) on the Norton Memorial Organ in Severance Hall, Cleveland, home of the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra. The 4-95 E. M. Skinner organ, op. 816, was dedicated in 1931 but was installed in the fly space 41 feet above the stage. Making the poor tonal egress worse, an orchestra shell installed much later effectively sealed the organ within sound-impenetrable chambers. Now, the organ has been moved out of the fly space and into newly-created space at the back of the stage, where its tonal egress is direct. It has been fully restored mechanically and tonally by the Schantz Organ Company. In this first CD on the organ, Todd Wilson plays: WILLCOCKS/ROBERTS: God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen Three settings of "In dulci jubilo" by Bach (2) and Dupré BRAHMS: Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen, Op. 122, No. 8 DAQUIN: Noel No. 10 PURVIS: Prelude on "Greensleeves" TCHAIKOVSKY: "Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy" The Nutcracker MILFORD: Pastoral Dance on "On Christmas Night" BAKER: Berceuse Paraphrase DUPRÉ: Variations on an Old Carol, Op. 20 DEMESSIEUX: Adeste fideles (O come, all ye faithful) CALLAHAN: Go, Tell It on the Mountain WEIDERMANN: Prelude on a Bohemian Carol "Chtíc, aby spal" ("Wanting the Child to Sleep") Fum, fum, fum!
