Sigfrid Karg-Elert's (1877-1933) Sixty-Six chorale improvisations on Evangelical church hymns are his first works composed directly for solo organ, Op. 65. Begun in 1906, Karg-Elert had planned to pen forty preludes. The collection grew, and he finished the works with a piece for organ and brass.
