The Ash Grove; Let All Things Now Living/Sent Forth by God's Blessing, arr. Jeremy J. Bankson
"The sentiment of giving thanks to God is captured in this joyful composition written for the anniversary of a celebrated 180-year-old Trinity Lutheran Church, St. Louis, MO. The selection of a tune paired to the text, "Let all things now living a song of thanksgiving," was most appropriate for that occasion. But other congregations celebrating such events, or moments of thanksgiving in the liturgical year, would find value in the use of this setting. The brass quintet and percussion, especially timpani, are integral to the composition, particularly evidenced in the first eight measures prior to the organ entering. Since the brass writing incorporates sixteenth-note flourishes and dotted eighth-sixteenth punctuations, the parts are not to be played by the faint of heart. The well-known text includes just two stanzas, so it is not a lengthy piece even with the 17-measure introduction, but in many settings this brevity will be useful. While stanza one retains a familiar harmony, stanza two colors the harmony a bit with flatted sixths and sevenths for the trumpet, tuba, and vocalists singing the descant."
