London in the second half of the 18th century. Hanover Square is one of the places to go for the cultured cream of high society. Here the inventor John Joseph Merlin opens a museum, whilst Johann Christian Bach and Karl Friedrich Abel put on their 'Bach & Abel concerts'. Catherine Zimmer offers us an unusual encounter between the composers and a brand new instrument - the square piano combined with an organ built by Merlin and the Gray brothers in 1784.
Music by Johann Christian Bach, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Karl Friedrich Abel, Joseph Haydn, John Hook, Maria Hesther Park, Ludwig Wenzel Lachnith and John Stanley
