From the first organ in Los Angeles, built by Joseph Mayer for St. Vibiana’s Roman Catholic Cathedral, to the E.M. Skinner organ in First Congregational Church, this book chronicles organs by Bergstrom, E. & G.G. Hook, Jardine, Farrand & Votey, Hutchings, Kilgen, Austin, Estey, Möller, Casavant, Wangerin, Kimball, Skinner, Murray Harris, Welte, Aeolian, Morton, Wurlitzer, and Kimball in churches, schools, lodges, department stores, apartment houses, outdoor theatres, cemeteries, and cinemas. There is even a stoplist of a proposed Welte for the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. With more than 35 photographs of the period, the book is an enjoyable travelogue guiding the reader through one of America’s most fascinating cities.

Music in the Marketplace: The Wanamaker Organ - by Ray Biswanger (Friends of the Wanamaker Organ)

$35.00
American millionaire Edward F. Searles will forever be remembered for his obsession with pipe organs. His most famous project was the construction of the magnificent Methuen Memorial Music Hall that houses the historic 1863 Walcker organ, originally installed in the Boston Music Hall. Searles had six other organs built for his homes, and one for his own organ factory. At the age of 46, Searles, then an interior decorator, married the fabulously wealthy widow of railroad magnate Mark Hopkins, 22 years his senior. Her death three years later left Searles with a $30-million fortune. This is the story of his lifetime involvement with the organ, illustrated with magnificent photographs of his many instruments.

Mr. Searles and the Organ - by James Lewis

$22.95
This fascinating book traces the evolution of the Los Angeles company through the demise of the Murray M. Harris Company, its successor the Los Angeles Art Organ Company, and then its short-lived successor, the Electrolian Company. Letters to and from the major stock holder in the company, Eben Smith, reveal the financial debacle of building the largest organ in the world, the 1904 St. Louis Louisiana Purchase Exposition organ—the nucleus of the famous Wanamaker organ,—and the on-going problems of obtaining contracts and keeping the firm out of bankruptcy.

The King of Instruments in the Crown City (1888-2000) - by James Lewis

$15.00
Compiled by William T. Van Pelt and published by the Organ Historical Society in 1991, this book is a valuable reference for the 2,614 organs built from 1827-1935 by E. & G. G. Hook, E. & G. G. Hook and Hastings, and Hook and Hastings. In the 333 pages are illustrations, opus lists, and facsimiles of promotional publications. Two essays on the firm cover important milestones in the progression of the organ-building of Elias and George Hook, and the inclusion of Frank Hastings into the company name. An intriguing and educational read!
